Kirwen Art Gallery interior with sculptures

Maureen Kirwen

Sculptor · Kirwen Art Company

Maureen Kirwen uses a combination of materials—primarily stone: alabaster, soapstone and marble—as the core of her award-winning, museum-quality sculptures. She has perfected her craft through a refined juxtaposition of strength, elegance and inventiveness, creating work whose weight feels profoundly heavier than the stone it once was.

She studied carving at the University of Toledo and the Vermont Carving Studio, and taught stone carving in the creative arts program at Ohio State University. Her work has been shown in galleries in New York, Miami, Washington and Columbus, and is held in numerous private collections including Elmore’s own Schedel Gardens.

Her current work explores textures released through chemical reactions as she infuses color into steel and copper. Ranging from warm and organic to boldly industrial, this work continues to exhibit the same natural forms which have always dominated her art.

Maureen owns and operates the Kirwen Art Company studio and gallery in picturesque Elmore, Ohio—located in a beautifully repurposed historic building on the corner of Rice and Augusta Street.
